anticoagulant
A drug that helps prevent the clotting (coagulation) of blood.
anti-platelet agent
Type of anticoagulant drug therapy that prevents the formation of blood clots by preventing the accumulation of platelets that form the basis of blood clots.
antithrombotic
Type of anticoagulant drug therapy that prevents the formation of blood clots by inhibiting the coagulating actions of the blood protein thrombin.
DCGI
The abbreviation for the Drug Controller General of India. It is the Indian government agency that regulates clinical research and the authorization of new drugs in India.
DSMB
The abbreviation for the Data Safety and Monitoring Board. It is an independant committee set up specifically to monitor data throughout the duration of a clinical study to determine if continuation of the study is safe and scientifically and ethically appropriate.
FDA
The abbreviation for the Food and Drug Administration. It is the United States government agency responsible for the evaluation and approval of drugs and medical devices.
Health Canada
The Canadian federal agency responsible for the evaluation and approval of drugs and medical devices.
hippocampus
The subcortical area of the brain that plays a critical role in the formation of long-term memories.
ischemic stroke
Ischemia in the tissues of the brain. Ischemia is the loss of blood flow to tissue, caused by an obstruction of the blood vessel, usually in the form of a plaque stenosis or a blood clot.
lateral ventricle
Cavity in each of the cerebral hemispheres derived from the cavity of the embryonic neural tube.
neurodegenerative disease
Hereditary and sporadic conditions which are characterized by progressive nervous system dysfunction. These disorders are often associated with atrophy of the affected central or peripheral nervous system structures.
neurogenesis
The production of new neuronal tissue.
neurogenesis promoting agent
Agent that stimulates neurogenesis.
neuron
A cell which conducts electric neural impulses from one part of the body to another.
neuronal cell
A neuron.
pharmacodynamics
The study of the mechanisms of actions of a drug and the relationship between how much drug is in the body and its effects.
pharmacokinetics
The study of the metabolism and action of drugs, with particular emphasis on the time required for absorption, duration of action, distribution in the body and excretion.
pharmacology
The study of drugs and dietary supplements and their origin, nature, properties, and effects upon living organisms.
stem cells
Undifferentiated cells that have the ability both to multiply and to differentiate into specific cells.
thrombolytic
Drug used to treat an ongoing, acute ischemic stroke by dissolving the blood clot causing the stroke and thereby restoring blood flow through the artery.
toxicology
The study of the harmful effects of substances on the body, including the level of toxicity, the mechanism by which toxicity occurs and how it can be controlled.
TPD
TPD: the abbreviation for the Therapeutic Products Directorate of Health Canada. The Canadian equivalent of the FDA.
