As the only Canadian public company focused exclusively on developing stem cell
therapeutic technologies, we are uniquely positioned as the commercialization partner
of choice for discoveries from basic research in regenerative medicine from Canadian
and international research institutions. The volume of research that requires a
development partner continues to grow as evidence by the establishment of the McEwen
Centre for Regenerative Medicine in 2010 and the Canadian Government-funded Centre
for the Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine, a partner with the Canadian
Networks of Centres of Excellence in 2011.
Our new team is actively reviewing numerous opportunities in regenerative medicine
to augment our existing pipeline of stem cell-based therapies. As one of the few
publicly-traded companies worldwide that are focused exclusively on stem cell therapies
we already possess a primary benefit of the spin-out process: the prospect of access
to capital from public markets.
We represent a unique platform to major academic institutions in their need to convert
basic research into products of value for patients with currently untreatable conditions.
We have attracted new leadership to the board of directors and management and we
are expanding our scientific advisory board, to ensure we have the necessary expertise
in the stem cell field to permit us to make informed decisions and an established
ability to raise capital to fund development.
We have sufficient cash on hand to fund the search for appropriate in-licensing
or acquisition candidates. We believe our public listing and track record within
the capital markets provide the necessary components to raise additional capital
once we have indentified these candidates.
Research universities and hospitals across Canada are international leaders in the
stem cell field and are producing exciting discoveries regularly but they are funded
to perform discovery research and are not funded to develop their discoveries beyond
preclinical and, to a small degree, early stage human trials.
Our approach is straightforward: assemble a pipeline of attractive stem cell-based
candidates with clearly defined milestone events. This clarity, together with our
reputation for discipline, will enable us to approach both new and existing investors
to fund development through to the event.
Our professional team of drug developers has the clinical experience and the access
to the necessary resources to deliver value to shareholders. In any endeavour of
significance, the early participants require a great deal of fortitude. It is widely
anticipated at the most knowledgeable levels that stem cell research will change
the face of how medicine is practiced. Dr. Weiss’ work and his vision have provided
us with a great head start in the race to bring stem cell therapies out of the lab
and into the commercial market. Our commitment to his vision and this exciting new
field is resolute. We have a unique opportunity to be one of the few early participants
in the revolution that stem cell-based therapies hold for the practice of medicine,
resulting in important outcomes for patients and investors.
