Dr. James M DeMesa | Biotechnology Executive, Consultant & Author Dr. DeMesa has been a practicing physician and has served as a senior executive with several international pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the areas of corporate management, regulatory affairs, and pre-clinical and clinical pharmaceutical and medical device product development. Most recently, in August 2008, Dr. DeMesa retired from his role as President & Chief Executive Officer and a director of Migenix Inc., a public biotechnology company focused on infectious and neurodegenerative diseases. Previously, from 1997-2001, he was President & Chief Executive Officer and a director of GenSci Regeneration Sciences Inc., a public biotech company involved in the field known as orthobiologics, which is the use of biotechnology to treat musculoskeletal disease and injury. From 1992 to 1997 he was Vice President, Medical and Regulatory Affairs at Biodynamics International, Inc., and from 1989 to 1992 was Vice President, Medical and Regulatory Affairs of Bentley Pharmaceuticals. Dr. DeMesa is a co-founder of CommGeniX, a medical communications company, and MedXcel, a medical education company.
In addition to Stem Cell Therapeutics, Dr. DeMesa also serves on the board of directors of Induce Biologics, a private Toronto-based biotechnology company. He attended the University of South Florida where he received his B.A. (Chemistry), M.D. and MBA degrees and did his medical residency at the University of North Carolina. He is the author of two books and speaks regularly to companies and organizations throughout North America.
Dr. Peter Milner | Research and Development consultant, ARYx Therapeutics Inc. Dr. Milner is a board certified physician and cardiologist, and serves as voluntary clinical faculty at Stanford Veterans’ Hospital. In June 1992, Dr. Milner co-founded CV Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. Prior to CV Therapeutics, Inc., Dr. Milner was an assistant professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Milner has numerous patents in his name and is the author of several scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Milner attended the University of Liverpool, England where he received a bachelor of sciences degree with honors in biochemistry and a degree in medicine. He completed his postgraduate training in medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School, cardiology and pharmacology at University of Virginia and molecular biology at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Milner is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, serves on the board of directors of California Healthcare Institute and the Scientific Advisory Board of Novartis Institute of Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Dr. Alan Moore | President & CEO Dr. Moore brings extensive drug development and clinical expertise to the company’s development team. He has 26 years of senior management experience in pharmaceutical research and development including 23 years with increasingly senior responsibilities at Procter & Gamble. During his extensive working history, Dr. Moore has completed 11 investigational new drug (IND) applications or supplemental INDs, 15 phase I studies, 12 phase II studies, 7 phase III studies (plus 2 additional phase III studies that are still in progress) and 2 new drug applications. One of Dr. Moore’s completed phase III studies enrolled 4,000 patients and included centres in 26 countries.
Dr. Moore obtained a Ph.D. in pharmacology in 1974 from the University of Aston in Birmingham, England. From 1977 to 1979 he was Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the Institute for Cardiovascular Studies and Department of Pharmacology at the University of Houston. From 1979 to 1982 he was Unit Leader, Pharmacology and Senior Research Scientist at Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals. Following the acquisition of Norwich Eaton by Procter & Gamble, Dr. Moore held increasingly senior positions as Section Chief, Director of Research, and then Director of New Drug Development before assuming his most recent role from 1998 to 2002 as General Manager, Cardiac R&D. Prior to joining Stem Cell Therapeutics, Dr Moore was Executive VP, clinical development and regulatory affairs at Cardiome Pharma Corp. from 2002 through end of 2004, where he was responsible for all clinical and regulatory activities.
Mr. Scott Tannas | Founder, President & CEO, Western Financial Group Mr. Tannas is the Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Western Financial Group (TSX: WES) a leading financial services provider of insurance , investment and banking products to more than 400,000 western Canadians through its subsidiaries and affiliates, which include Bank West, Western Life Assurance Company, and the WFG Agency Network. Mr. Tannas is also a director of a number of private and public companies.
Born and raised in High River, Alberta, Scott Tannas initially joined the travel and tourism business in Calgary and became Vice President of an expanding tour operation, before establishing his own successful Calgary-based management consulting company in 1988.
Between 1988 and 1993, Tannas Tourism Strategies conducted successful projects for senior management at some of Canada's leading companies.
In 1993, Scott acquired a partnership in Hi-Alta Insurance and recognized the potential for acquisition and consolidation in the rural sector of the insurance brokerage industry. Together with industry and community leaders, he founded Hi-Alta Capital Inc. in 1996 as a junior capital pool and acquired Hi-Alta Agencies.
Scott has been nominated for a number of awards as a result of the success of Hi-Alta Capital, including Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
